Re: Recommended voluntary system upgrade to all ships.
All ships that have not yet come in for upgrades to the fleet's docking facilities on Mars or Saturn, please reconsider and do so. Even if you do not plan to use the system yourself, the emergency beacon will be helpful for other fleet members. Thank you again for the cooperation most of you have already shown.

Ship's Log - Horizon III - Captain Peter Evans
February 4, 2196
Sector Delta-549
----------
{1015 hours}
Departed Saturn StarPort for Lower Belt at 0947 hours on the Horizon III's maiden voyage. Recommended Serenity upgrades have been made. Crew have settled in to their new stations and quarters. Crew is now fifteen, including boarding party and miners. Estimate arrival in Lower Belt at 1223 hours.
==========
"...and all I'm sayin is it would taste better if you had something better for me to cook with."
Captain Peter Evans smiled politely, but firmly, not giving an inch. The fact that the ship's new Mess Attendant (aka cook) was right didn't change anything. "Until we get to port there's nothing to be done. Talk to me then." He nodded and continued down the hall that he had been walking down when she ran into him. Anna, the cook, was the daughter of a family of miners the Horizon III had taken on.
At the end of the hall he found a stairwell. He entered and climbed down. It was three more flights before he reached his destination, the mining center of the ship. The first face he saw was the one he was looking for. "Raul, that daughter of yours is going to fillet me if I don't get her real food, she says."
"You're in for it now," the older man chuckled, returning to his controls. "This asteroid is nearly spent. The nickel was good quality, but the iron not so much. We skipped it to fill up on the nickel."
"Alright. Pack it up. We're going hunting. I want to see what this baby can do."
~~~~~~~~~~
The bridge was reasonably large, but no bigger than the one on his old frigate. Fully manable, only three of the seats were in use. Pete liked a three man bridge. He watched the feed from Tactical and Nav-Com through his Con-Ops station. The Horizon III was cruising smoothly through the asteroid belt, looking for a fight. The ship slid in and out of the fields like a shark maneuvering around schools of little fish, looking for something bigger -- something worth a bite.
The haul off the zerkerdrone was a good one. It weren't no derelict neither. The miners down in the ship's belly continued to salvage scrap metal and minerals from the devastated hulk. It would be valuable to sell once they got back to civilization. The Horizon III had been swimming through blackness for several days now, hunting and being hunted by the automated atrocities of the Sons of Earth. Each time they had gotten the better of the things -- drones and zerkerdrones, even a star probe showed it's face.
Commander Emmet Wesgard kept his eye on the sensor feed. One never knew what they would find here in the deep belt. So far they had been lucky; they hadn't run afoul of any other captain. There might be a lot of ships out there, but space was a big place. Still, when everybody wants the same resources, it's bound to get hot in the cold of space. Emmet picked up the intercom and dialed up the mining bay. "This is Emmet to mining bay. How much longer will this hulk be worth the time?"
A few moments later the call came back. "We've got all the big valuable stuff. All that's left is fragments. Worth something, but not that much."
"Alright. Pack it in. No use wasting our time. We're gonna cash this cargo in."
"Roger that."
"Bridge out." With the push of a button Emmet turned the intercom off. He was starting to like this larger ship. He remembered offhandedly the years he spent in a tiny sloop. A smile slowly inched across his face. It had taken time for him to get used to sharing space with others. For so long it had just been himself and Pete. He was less than thrilled to take on a larger ship and crew, but now it was really paying off. They were in the big time with a real fighting class vessel. Not a warship, but maybe someday.
Emmet looked over the data on his terminal. All systems were still green; the mining and salvage equipment were being locked down in the mining hold. "Alright. Looks good people. I'm sure the tax man will be glad to see us coming. Let's slide home." With that Emmet set a new course out of the deep asteroid belt and toward Saturn starport at high cruising speed.
Saturn was a few hours from the lower regions of the asteroid belt at its present orbit. The ride was relatively uneventful. A few other ships flew within sensor range, but everybody pretty much left each other alone. All the better as far as Emmet was concerned. He would have rather dropped his cargo at the Lower Belt and stay, but they had business at Saturn and time was more precious than cash.
As the ship neared Saturn starport Emmet caught sight of the first security ship. "The bold and the bright, Saturn security forces," he muttered.
"Commander," came a voice from down below -- navigation-communication, or nav-com for short. "We've got a bogey coming at us at a course of 124-z46."
"Is it for sure coming for us? What class ship?"
"It's a... Zerker?"
"What the hell is a SoE Zerkerdrone doing around the station. They keep to the belt. What is it, really?"
"No really. Look at the feed. We've got visual."
Emmet pulled up the screen. A tiny red spot shone among the stars where it should not be. He zoomed in completely, but it still looked small. "Well. Looks SoE enough. And course confirms it's heading straight for us."
The battle station officer turned and asked, "Are we going to engage?"
"No, looks like security is already on it. Besides, we have cargo. Bring us in to dock. We've got money to make. Besides, I want to know why there's a drone around here. Maybe there'll be a rumor or two."
Noticing a ship on the sensors Capt. Drekell takes speed in his new Frigate Mk IV, and as he closes in he gets visual and sees that its a SoE Zerker. Calling down to the Engine Room Drekell, with enthusiasm says, " Hey we got a SoE Zerker ahead of us, Punch It!"
The Crew responds with a resounding "Hurrah!" and the Frigate gains on the Zerker. As he gets close Capt. Drekell Takes note of the two dots that where once only one and radios out "Serenity Fleet Ship Underestimated in Command under Captain Drekell to unidentified Frigate, state your intentions.
The corridors were predictably busy on this part of the Saturn starport. There was always something going on at Saturn, a mish-mash of frigates and warships, miners and station rats, free captains and pirates. Pete stepped past them all with one hand near his gun. Projectile weapons aren't allowed on the outer parts of the station, something about punching a hole in the side of the place, but that didn't stop people from carrying them.
He turned the corner against the flow of traffic to see what he had come to see -- a large sliding double door that looked like real wood with a round symbol painted from floor to ceiling on it. In the middle was painted a series of Chinese characters. "Serenity Stronghold" it said. Not that he could read it, but that's what he was told. His boots clunked as he made his way to the door -- which slid open at his approach into the lobby. A simple robot greeted him once inside. He waved it off. Once he had approached the safe-door he inserted his Serenity medallion into the scanner, stood for his fully body scan, and said "Evans, Peter, Horizon III."
"Identity confirmed," said the voice a moment later, and he was in.
The lights were slightly dimmed inside as he came forward into the main hall. There were a handful of folks milling about, talking about what they will. As he entered several turned and looked to see who it was. Pete waved off-handedly, moving toward the data-banks of open fleet records. Then, just loud enough to be overheard he asked the computer. "Display all known SoE attacks on or around Saturn starport in the last 2 years. Now, sort by date." His mouth grew into a mild frown. "More attacks that before... why?"
Capt. Drekell pushed his way past the throng of people ending up at the Serenity Spaceport door, fuming.
"HEY! I found a SoE Zerker and it took off as I gave chase. I want to know why the hell it was outside of the Asteroid Belt! And someone find out who was out there salvaging a dead Zerker. I saw them and was to busy nailing the drone to an asteroid to care at the time and they didn't answer my hails. We need to collect tax on whom ever that was."
Capt. Drekell kept running around as the rest of the crew headed to the Tavern to have a beer.
Nav - "Hey did you see that Zerkerdrone run!"
Weapons - "Yeah that was freaking amazing!"
Nav - "... so how did the new Laser Battery work after you amped it up?"
Weapons - "Failed a couple times but over all the damage output was increased to 138% from the original 88%"
Nav - "That targeting computer you been lookin at would help a ton"
Weapons - "Yeah but the Capt. said as long as we can hit the target we don't need it..."
Nav - "That's bull... it would allow us to hit better"
Weapons - "Yeah I know... Hey Frank! How the Engines running?
Frank - "Amazing, the Class V Drive Unit still working like a charm..."
Nav - "That's good, well lets celebrate! First round on me!"
Weapons and Frank - "Sounds good to us"
As the night wore on the Crew got much needed rest and the Capt kept working to find out why that Zerkerdrone was there and why SoE was sitting in Serenity Territory, not finding anything.
Captain Evans turned his head and looked as the man started to shout across the room. He looked him over, unsure what to make of him. He was a captain, no doubt, but of what he did not know. Peter pressed the button for a print-out of the screen he had been looking at, all the while watching Captain Drekell running around. Once the page was ready, he picked it up, and started his purposeful walk toward the other captain -- an 'almost' smile on his face.
"No answers here. How about more questions," he said, holding out the paper showing the increasing trends toward the fuming captain.
"Capt Philip Lawley reporting in at Pluto Station for mandatory upgrades."
an electronic voice chirpped back "All Clear Captain. Bring the Bryaugh in"
"The Bryaugh is a fine ship. Treat her well. She may not be the prettiest ship in the fleet, but she can spit fire and bring the rain almost as well as any"
Philip then turned over the helm to his nav officer and proceded to his quaters to prepare for a short shoreleave as the new Phaser Emitter were being installled.
4 new guns to replace most of the outdated Fusion Blaster Arrays were on the schedule this time.
As Phil entered his cabin he brushed the door frame and thought, 'It's gonna be wierd to be back in real grav for awhile been on this boat for a few years with a long port like this"
He then tapped on the com system "Capt Lawley transfering control of the Bryaugh to Serenity Pluto Station. Keep me informed of the progress Serenity"
Capt. Lawley was just about to settle in to a good holo-novel in the officers club on Pluto when he heard his commuacator squawk
"Hey Cap it's Sparky"
Lt. TC "Sparky" Norman was the Bryaugh's Chief Engineer and he was unhealtily obcessed with the ship
"Go 'head Sparky" replied Phil
"Hey I was just on the old girl and all the shiny new guns and engines are in place and ready to go"
"Uhhmm- Sparky you were ordered off the ship and are on MANDATORY shore-leave. If I have to be on soil so do you Sparky". The tone in Phil's voice was a cross between wanting to trottle Lt. Norman and wanting to join him in crawling in and arround his ship. "Serenity Pluto has the Bryaugh till further notice. You will be thrown in the brig if someone catches you and I'll be there to hold the keys until I need you to fix my engines. DO YOU COPY, Sparky?"
"I read you loud and clear Cap. DON'T get caught."And with a crackle Sparky signed off.
A second later Capt. Lawley's radio chripped again this time with the brisk authority of the commander of the Serenity Pluto station"Captain LAwley report to my office immediately".
"Aye-Aye Commander." And with that the communicator went silent. Phil was left with the thought, 'Thank goodness that this shore-leave is over and we can finally get back into the black.'
Phil arrived at the commander's office as the assistant was leaving and he got shown in. The commander was a sight, what he lacked in height i he more than made up for in his seer presence. He was almost 2meters wide at his shoulders but all muscles and his uniform looked like it was losing a battle to hold together at the seams.
"I'll be quick with you Captain Lawley as time is short. There seems to be some trouble near Saturn. Take the Brayaugh and go explore the asteroid belt near the outer rings"
"What kind of trouble, sir?" already knowing what it had to be since the Bryaugh was being called into service ahead of schedule.
"That's on a need to know basis Captain. But I can tell you it's the SoE. They are up to something and they've been getting closer and closer to Serenity space"
"Is there anything else I need to know, sir?"
"No, your orders are being uploaded to the Bryaugh as we speak. Good Luck son." With that the Commander saluted and Capt. Lawley knew it was time to leave.
As he walked briskly toward the hanger bay he flip on the communicator thumbed the shipwide channel and stated
"ALL HANDS! Report to your stations! REPEAT- ALL HANDS! Report to your stations! this is an order from Serenity Pluto."
Capt. Drekell looked at the report that Capt. Evans gave him and frowned.
"What is this s***?" Snapped Capt. Drekell
"Its a battle report from the small frigate you spotted on your scanners" Answered Evans in a calm, cool manner.
"Bah! What was the Horizon III doing out there!?"
"The Commander of the ship was salvaging a Zerker that he destroyed."
"He get anything?"
"Only a record log of its memory core... the rest was almost completely fried."
"It's saying that there is a spy in Serenity it was supposed to pick up???? I didn't know that Zerkers where capable of holding humans..."
"They aren't..."
"Had to have been modified"
"The crew of the Horizon mentioned life support systems that where outdated and Zerkers are known to take space debris so they dismissed it...."
"Take this to the Commodore immediately, I am getting a small fleet together to patrol the station"
"See you around Capt. Drekell."
"And yourself Capt. Evans"
Capt. Drekell sped off nearly shoving people out of the way with a look of pure fury at SoE spying on them in his eyes. Less then 12 hours later Patrols where started around the station.
